Arch Expansion for Adults

About Adult Arch Expansion

Adult orthodontic arch expansion is a treatment approach used to widen the dental arches to improve dental alignment, bite function, and overall oral health.

This procedure is particularly beneficial for adults who may have had previous orthodontic treatment, have developed crowding due to tooth eruption, or have specific functional or aesthetic concerns.

There are several ways to carry out arch expansion techniques and there are several benefits to using these techniques.

Benefits of Adult Arch Expansion

Adult arch expansion involves the use of various types of orthodontic appliances to gradually increase the width of the upper or lower dental arch. This is often achieved through fixed or removable devices that exert gentle pressure on the teeth and surrounding bone.

This method is often achieved through fixed or removable devices that exert gentle pressure on the teeth and surrounding bone.

Although there is limited scientific evidence, the anecdotal evidence is mounting to support the fact that the effect of widening the arches may help with improving breathing and sleep, and many of our patients have reported this.

Dentist, Dr Biju has been using these techniques for over 20 years and is recognised as an expert in this field.

Techniques

Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE) /
Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME)

A device is fitted to the upper molars, which is turned regularly to apply pressure on the palatal suture, gradually widening the arch.

This process splits the suture in the roof of the mouth and is used by many orthodontists and typically used in cases with a very narrow upper arch.

This is not a technique used by our team. We believe in a slower approach which encourages bone growth.

Slow Palatal Expansion

Similar to RPE, but the expansion process is slower and may use a less aggressive appliance.

Suitable for adults, as their palatal sutures are more fused, requiring careful adjustment.
This is the technique we prefer to use as we believe it works more in harmony with your body.

Usually carried out in conjunction with complementary therapists such as cranial osteopaths and myofunctional therapists.

Skeletal Expanders

These devices anchor to the bone, providing more stability for expansion and reducing the risk of relapse.

Can be more effective in adults due to the rigidity of the bone structure.

Clear Aligners

Some modern aligner systems can incorporate expansion by designing specific movements that gently increase arch width over time.

Advantages:

  1. Avoids the need extractions or cutting of the teeth.  The most common ways to create space in the dental arches where the teeth are crowded are to take teeth out or cut the teeth to make them thinner – a technique known as Interproximal Reduction (IPR). Widening the dental arches significantly reduces the need for either of these procedures.
  2. Improved Alignment: Expanding the arch can help alleviate crowding and widen the smile, improving the overall aesthetic appearance of the smile.
  3. Better Function: It can enhance the bite, leading to improved chewing efficiency and reduced strain on the jaw joints.
  4. Increased Space: Provides more space for teeth that are impacted or have erupted in a misaligned manner.
  5. Facilitates Other Treatments: Creates a more favorable environment for subsequent orthodontic procedures, such as tooth movement with braces or clear aligners.
  6. Health Benefits: May help in resolving issues related to sleep apnea and maintaining proper airway space. Although there is no robust scientific evidence to back this up, many of our patients have reported this benefit.

Appliances

ALF appliances

Orthodontic ALF (Advanced Light Force) appliances are innovative orthodontic devices designed to provide gentle and effective corrective treatment for various dental issues. These appliances focus on expanding the dental arch while enhancing overall dental and facial aesthetics.

ALF appliances utilise a unique wire configuration that allows for gradual and controlled movement of the teeth and jaw, ensuring a more comfortable experience for patients. They are particularly beneficial for adults seeking non-invasive solutions for alignment, crowding, and jaw relationship issues.

Dr Biju Krishnan is one of the UK’s foremost experts in the use of ALF appliances in both children and adults.

Key Benefits of ALF Appliances:
  • Gentle Expansion: ALF appliances promote slow, gentle expansion of the dental arch, minimizing discomfort and maximizing effectiveness.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a range of orthodontic conditions, including crowding, spacing, and crossbites.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics: Supports improved facial symmetry and aesthetics while aligning teeth.
  • Non-Invasive: Offers a more comfortable alternative to traditional braces, making it ideal for adults and older teens.

Schwartz Appliances and other Arcylic Expanders

Orthodontic Schwartz appliances are specialised devices designed to facilitate dental arch expansion and improve overall oral function. Commonly used in orthodontics, these removable appliances consist of an acrylic retainer-like framework that gently applies pressure to the teeth, promoting alignment and enhancing the shape of the dental arch.

Key Features of Schwartz Appliances:

  • Arch Expansion: Ideal for expanding the upper jaw to create more space for teeth, reducing crowding and improving bite relationships.
  • Custom Fit: Each appliance is tailored to the individual patient’s dental structure, ensuring comfort and effectiveness.
  • Versatile Applications: Effective for various orthodontic concerns, including crossbites, spacing issues, and promoting proper eruption of permanent teeth.
  • Removable Option: Unlike fixed appliances, Schwartz appliances can be easily removed for eating and cleaning, providing convenience for patients.

Fixed Rigid Expanders (Hyrax Expanders)

The orthodontic Hyrax appliance is a fixed palatal expander designed to widen the upper jaw, creating more space for teeth and improving alignment.

Typically used in growing patients, it consists of a metal framework anchored to the molars with bands.

The appliance features a central screw that can be gradually adjusted to apply gentle pressure, effectively expanding the palate over time.

This treatment can address issues such as crossbites, overcrowding, and facial asymmetry, ultimately enhancing both function and aesthetics.

The Hyrax appliance is a versatile tool in orthodontics, and is a good option for those children or adults that prefer not to have a removable expander.

Biobloc Appliance

Biobloc Appliance

The Biobloc orthodontic appliance is an innovative solution for achieving optimal dental alignment and supporting healthy jaw development in children and adults. Unlike traditional braces, the Biobloc orthodontic system employs a holistic approach that encourages natural growth patterns, effectively guiding teeth and jaws into ideal positions.

This non-invasive appliance is designed for comfort, making it easier for young patients to wear while addressing common issues such as crossbites, overcrowding, and misalignment. By prioritizing functional aesthetics, the Biobloc not only enhances smiles but also promotes overall oral health.

Homeoblock Appliance

The Homeoblock™ appliance is a revolutionary patented dental solution that goes beyond traditional teeth straightening methods.
The Homeoblock™ dental appliance works synergistically with the body to facilitate natural physiological changes. When worn, the unique design of the Homeoblock™ delivers a  intermittent light force signal to the periodontal ligament surrounding the teeth roots. Its innovative Unilateral Bite Block® mimics the effects of harder foods, promoting proper jaw function and development.
This epigenetic signaling encourages new bone growth and positional changes in the facial structure, supporting overall health and wellness.
